Thumbs down on air

Coldstream's mayor is disappointed by the lack of interest in an air quality service in the North Okanagan.

“It's unfortunate,” said Jim Garlick. “That's one of the things the Ministry of Environment said would be a good thing to work together on when the (Pinnacle) pellet plant came into the area, to deal with it on a regional basis.”

Coldstream had proposed that members of the North Okanagan Regional District support and help pay for an air quality function to monitor pollution levels in the area.

But Armstrong, Enderby and Lumby councils have already rejected the proposal and electoral districts have expressed little interest.

“When we get more proposals for industry in the region, we have to be taking care of air quality as well,” said Garlick. “It does make sense.”

Garlick said concerns over smoke from wood stoves can be remedied by the installation of newer stoves that release less pollutants into the air.

He said alternative modes of transportation should be promoted so there would be fewer cars of the road, eliminating some of the dust and exhaust from the air.
