Parks and more parks

Work is being done on local parks and there's a request for another one to be established.

About $55,000 has gone into maintenance this year at Camp Hurlburt on Okanagan Lake, said Keith Pinkoski, parks planner with the North Okanagan Regional District.

The money has been spent removing dangerous trees and stumps and putting up fencing around the dining hall. Changes to entrance signage are still be worked on with Trinity United Church, the former owner.

Portable toilets, garbage removal and other items will be in place soon, Pinoski said.

“Parking is the biggest issue” for local people, although beach access and proper toilets are also on that list, he said.

Although $30,000 has been budgeted for work at Crane Road park, it is not yet under way.

Meanwhile, the Foothills Community Association has asked for the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee to consider a new park at the top of the Vernon subdivision that overlooks Swan Lake.

Neighbours have pinpointed a 19.5-hectare area, currently three privately-owned large lots, that could be left in its natural state with a network of routes, including multi-use pathways and trails.

The land has not come up for development or sale at this time.
