Watchful eye on water

There has been no snow in the hills around Vernon since the beginning of May, but officials are not talking drought yet.

“As of May 1, there was no snow at any of our snow courses. This is not uncommon,” said Renee Clark, water quality manager with Greater Vernon Water. “At our historical Aberdeen site (same elevation as our reservoirs), 26 out of 47 years there has been no snow on May 1.”

The snowpack stood at 125 per cent of normal by late February, however above-average temperatures in April saw Duteau Creek reservoirs filling and then spilling earlier than was usual. Water staff issued an alert about fast moving water on April 21.

“In the past four years our reservoirs have filled and spilled  earlier,” conceded Clark. “This becomes a concern if we go into the stored water earlier in the year.”

“We are monitoring precipitation, reservoir levels and water demands to make decisions in a timely manner.”
