Presence felt in Spall

Members of Save the Hullcar Aquifer are hoping to fill Spallumcheen council chambers Monday night as efforts for safer drinking water continue.

As well, a letter-writing campaign complaining of building permits being issued to a local dairy farm are expected to be tabled at the council meeting, according to SHAT spokesperson Al Price.

Mayor Janice Brown has already explained council had no choice but to issue the permits to the farm, even though there is concern the operation could be part of the cause of high nitrate levels in drinking water from the Hullcar aquifer.

Approximately 300 people get their water from that source.

There is some indication the nitrates come from liquid manure spread on dairy farms fields, however, Brown said provincial officials are waiting for definitive proof.

The Ministry of Environment said the tests that could prove or dismiss area farms as the cause of the nitrate levels would not be ready until November.
