Four-day school week?

Vernon School District's $90.5 million 2016-17 budget has been approved by trustees.

It is the largest budget in the past decade, said board chairperson Kelly Smith - due to an increased number of students.

With the budget approved, the board is considering future options to save money, including third-party busing, increasing school rentals, cutting clerical and custodian work hours to ten months of the year and a four-day school week.

According to Smith, there were a lot of ideas presented during the budget consultation process.

“We've just asked staff for a ballpark figure for going to a four-day week,” said Smith, who added it was not something the board had ever talked about.

“People just suggested it,” Smith said, so the board would take a look at it.
