Burning to take part

Firefighting prowess will be on show this weekend at the Pacific Regional Firefit competition taking place in Vernon on Saturday and Sunday.

“It's a real range of talent,” said Fiona Morgenthaler-Code, assistant chief with the Coldstream fire department. “We have competitors who are taking part for the first time up to some of the fastest in the world.”

She said those taking part are from all over the province as well as the Yukon, Ontario and even the U.S.

Competitors face grueling tasks that must be completed properly and as fast as possible.

“Each part (of the course) is an evolution of real life stuff we face at a fire,” said Morgenthaler-Code.

These include pulling hoses up a staircase and breaking through doorways.

“At the end we have to pick up 'Rescue Randy,' a 185-pound mannequin and drag him to safety.”

The mannequin is designed to simulate the average Canadian male.

Morgenthaler-Code said some of the fastest competitors can complete the course in one minute and 12 seconds.

“They're the elite of the elite,” said Morgenthaler-Code. “It's awe inspiring.”

The two-day event takes place at the Vernon Toyota parking lot, 3401 48th Avenue.

Opening ceremonies on both days begin at 10:45 a.m. with events starting at 11 a.m. The general public is welcome to attend.
