Campaign picks up steam

A letter writing campaign opposing an expansion of a dairy farm operation in Spallumcheen is “picking up steam,” says Al Price, spokesperson for the Save the Hullcar Aquifer Team (SHAT).

Price is urging residents within the Steele Springs Waterworks District to write to Spallumcheen council even if it is a one line email.

About 200 people get their water from Steele Springs' Hullcar aquifer, which is the subject of two Interior Health drinking water advisories related to nitrate contamination.

Local residents say the farm is one of the causes of the tainted water because effluent is sprayed on its field.

According to Price, the Township has received two building permit applications from HS Jansen and Sons farm Ltd. – including one for a large addition to one of the dairy barns.

Earlie this month, the province issued pollution abatement orders to several farming operations in the area.
