Liberals head to convention

Thirteen members of the North Okanagan Shuswap Federal Liberal Riding Association are heading to the national Liberal convention in Winnipeg May 26-28. More than 4,500 delegates from across the country have registered for the convention.

”We promised that we would be active in the riding, and we have been,” said Cindy Derkaz, riding association president.

Derkaz ran in last October's federal election, coming in second to Conservative Mel Arnold, as Justin Trudeau and the Liberals swept much of the country to form a majority government.

“We have a really strong contingent with a great deal of experience in everything from policy development to youth issues,” said Derkaz.

The association said a priority policy resolution proposing a comprehensive national water security strategy should be of particular importance to local residents, especially those living in Spallumcheen's Huller Valley, where water tainted with nitrates has been a problem for years.

“This is an extremely important convention and we will have strong voices in many of the discussions,” said Derkaz.
