Fire scorches lumber yard

UPDATED: 1:35 p.m.

Fire crews appear to have the blaze at Mardan Lumber Sales under control, while continuing to douse a large smoldering sawdust pile.

A charred piece of heavy machinery is on its side in the yard, and there are several pieces of burned lumber scattered nearby.

Three fire trucks are on scene, mopping up the remnants of the blaze.

ORIGINAL: 1:25 p.m

A fire has quickly spread through Mardan Lumber Sales on Highway 97 in the Spallumcheen area.

The blaze broke out just before 1 p.m., but quickly grew due to winds in the area.

A witness at the scene said the fire had reached a sawdust pile and there are concerns of it jumping into nearby forested areas.

The Okanagan Indian Band Volunteer Fire Department is on scene, along with Emergency Health Services.

The BC Wildfire Service is aware of the blaze, but local fire crews on scene have not yet requested their help.

There are no reported injuries, and all of the yard’s employees appear to have gotten away safely.

More information will be updated as it becomes available.
