Road safety in spotlight

A cycling group is trying to raise awareness of road safety following a shocking incident earlier this month when a mother and daughter out on their bikes were hit by a pickup, which then sped off into the night.

Mae Hooper, 55, and her 17-year-old daughter were cycling on Buchanan Road in Coldstream on May 6 when the incident occurred. Hooper is still suffering from a concussion and back injuries sustained in the crash.

The male driver of the pickup has come forward and police are recommending charges be laid.

The Greater Vernon Cycling Advisory Committee is holding a road safety awareness walk and ride that starts at the regional district's headquarters at the corner of Aberdeen Road and Highway 6 in Coldstream on Thursday, May 19 at 7 p.m.

“Cycling and walking are important modes of transportation in the North Okanagan, leading to healthier lifestyles, happier residents, less road congestion, and lower pollution and carbon emissions. However, residents must feel safe to use the roads on bicycles or by foot,” said Ward Strong, spokesperson for the committee.

“This walk and ride will promote safety awareness among people who cycle, walk and drive vehicles on our public roads, hopefully reducing the chances of another dangerous incident like Mae and her daughter sustained.”

Strong said those who take part must wear bright clothes and helmets are mandatory for cyclists. The route is expected to take 75 minutes for walkers and 25 minutes for cyclists.
