Slowing the speeders

An incident that sent two female cyclists to hospital last Friday has prompted Coldstream council to consider action to slow down speeding vehicles.

Staff at the District of Coldstream have been asked to look at ways of slowing speeders on at least three major roads, including Kalamalka Lake, Buchanan and Coldstream Creek.

On May 6, a mother and daughter on bicycles were knocked down by a pickup on Buchanan Road, which then sped off. Both women were taken to hospital suffering from non-life threatening injuries.

The RCMP have asked for the public's assistance in finding the driver and vehicle.

“We want to be proactive,” said Mayor Jim Garlick. “We're considering (barriers) so people don't cut corners, and even narrowing parts of the road to slow traffic. It's for those drivers who use excessive speed on the roads.”

He said Coldstream Creek Road was “busy with people who go out to Kal Lake Park leaving a walker not much area to get safely out of the way.”

Garlick said the district sometimes uses retired RCMP officers on traffic detail and is also considering increasing those hours to deal with speeders.
