Tower of strength

All the activity in front of Vernon Fire Rescue's downtown fire station is in aid of its 125th birthday party on May 7.

A brick tower is being built to hold the 2,000-pound bell that sits on a cement pad on the north side of the station.

The massive bell used to call fire crews to duty at the old fire station that was located across from Cenotaph Park.

Once it's installed, the bell is expected to be used for ceremonial purposes and as a memorial for line-of-duty deaths, according to fire chief Keith Green.

Vernon Fire Rescue will celebrate its birthday on Saturday May 7.

The brigade was born on May 9, 1891, said Green.
