Opposition resonating

Another discordant note has been sounded over a proposed amphitheatre on Okanagan College's Vernon campus following a chorus of noes from neighbours.

Coldstream council has voted to send a letter to the college, the Okanagan Summer Festival Society and Vernon Monashee MLA Eric Foster expressing its opposition to the plan.

“Council does not support the amphitheatre project at its proposed location,” said Coun. Glen Taylor.

He said the council vote on the motion was unanimous.

The decision followed a presentation by a group calling itself the Concerned Citizens of Coldstream.

Members of the group packed the council chamber and spilled out into the hallway Monday night.

The presentation listed what the group felt could be major problems if the amphitheatre was built, including noise, parking and environmental destruction of a wildlife corridor.

“It is too big a venue in such close proximity to a residential neighbourhood,” said Taylor, adding there would be noise, traffic and sewer issues.

He said council liked the proposal but not the proposed location.
