Still no word on slide report

There is still no definitive word on when a report on a 2012 slide in Cherryville will be released.

Cherryville director Hank Cameron said a freedom of information request was put in, and local officials were told in January the geotechnical and compliance and enforcement reports were almost ready to be released.

Then in February, Cameron said Ministry of Forest, Lands and Natural Resources officials told him the reports would not be released because of privacy issues surrounding the possibility an offense had been committed, and then last week Cameron was told someone else was looking into the file.

But after all that, there is still no word when the report will be made public, and that concerns Cameron.

“It's been a four-year process,” he said Thursday. “Certainly after four years they know what happened. That really should be public information.”

Cameron said there are numerous safety concerns surrounding the slide as well.

“Once you've had a slide, there's nothing stopping it from happening again,” said Cameron. It's still an active site. Some pretty large trees got swept away and they had a stabilizing effect and now they are gone.”

Cameron said information in the report could be important to other areas that have steep terrain where logging operations are being conducted.
