Pogo car bounces to Vernon

The driver is looking at a hefty bill, an employee got to go skiing and staff at Edmonton-based Pogo had a good chuckle after one of their vehicles turned up in Vernon.

Pogo Car Share is a car-sharing service that gives members 24/7 access to a pool of vehicles located within a defined, central zone of the city.

Pogo members locate cars within the zone using the mobile phone app or website. Available cars are shown on a map and can be reserved for up to 15 minutes. Drivers can then use their Pogo membership card or key fob to unlock the car, access the keys and off they go.

The driver pays for the exact amount of time they use the vehicle. Gas, insurance and parking are all included, and one-way trips are allowed within the zone.

However, one driver skipped over that detail and took a one-way trip to the Okanagan.

Allison Harrison, Pogo marketing and communications manager, said people can take a car out of the zone, or even on a road trip but they must bring it back, something the unidentified driver neglected to do.

It costs $70 a day to use one of the vehicles and the wayward driver will have to pay that amount for the entire time the car was out, along with the cost of retrieving the vehicle. Harrison said he will also be hit with a cleaning fee “because the car was not in the nicest condition when we picked it up.”

The car was located using GPS and found to be some 900 km out of the zone.

“This has never happened before,” said Harrison, adding people do take the cars out of the zones, but they always bring them back.

Because they were in new territory, staff at Pogo looked into the most cost-effective way to return the wandering auto to Alberta.

Finally, a co-worker said he would take a bus to Vernon and drive the car back on one condition: he be allowed to stop for a day of skiing in Revelstoke.

The car is now back in Edmonton, a staffer got to enjoy a day on B.C. slopes and the company is not expecting any more trouble from the driver.

“He is no longer a member of Pogo,” said Harrison.
