Funtastic gives back

The Funtastic Sports Society has doled out $30,000 in funding for sports and community groups in the North Okanagan.

The biggest grant has gone to the Silver Star Freestyle Club which, received $6,000 for equipment and protective mats for step one of a four step plan towards a freestyle air training facility.

The Vernon Lawn Bowling Club, which started in 1917, received the second biggest grant at $4,000. The club will be hosting the lawn bowling component of the 55+ BC Games in Vernon next year and plans to use the funds to construct, purchase and install 10 semi-permanent sun shade awnings on three sides of the lawn bowling greens. 

Diana Williamson, Funtastic president, announced the recipients of the 2016 grants Thursday.

They include:

  • Cherryville Community Club - $3,000 for playground project
  • European Football Club of the Okanagan - $1,500 for equipment
  • North Okanagan Minor Lacross Association - $1,000 for equipment
  • NONA Child Development Centre - $2,100 for equipment
  • Okanagan Standup Paddle Board Society - $1,500 for equipment
  • Schubert Centre Society - $3,000 for equipment
  • Silver Star Freestyle Club - $6,000 for equipment
  • Sovereign Lake Nordic Club - $2,000 for equipment
  • Spinal Cord BC - $1,000 for equipment
  • Vernon Figure Skating Club - $800 for equipment
  • Vernon Lawn Bowling Club - $4,000 for equipment
  • Vernon Minor Fastball Association - $1,500 for equipment
  • Vernon Soccer Association - $1,800 for nets
  • Vernon Tennis Association - $800 for hitting backboard

“Funtastic is proud to be able to support local sports organizations through grants that cover such things as equipment and capital costs for sports related activities,” said a Funtastic press release.  

Donations and grants from the society over the past 32 years has totalled approximately $1.7 million.

Funtastic's slo-pitch tournament takes place this year from June 30 to July 3rd. The music festival runs during the evenings of June 30 to July 2.
