Education financial crunch

School district officials in the North Okanagan Shuswap remain tight-lipped over how to cover a massive financial shortfall expected in the 2016-17 budget.

Superintendent Glenn Borthistle was the front man during three town hall meetings within the district, where he explained to parents and residents a number of schools had to close due to falling enrollment and a lack of funds.

Then on Tuesday, the board of education voted to extend the consultation process on recommended closures to April 2017.

The decision gave a one-year reprieve to Armstrong Elementary and Silver Creek Elementary in Salmon Arm.

How the district will cover its expected $1.3 million shortfall is not yet known.

“We have a budget advisory committee that is meeting on a regular basis and looking at how to balance the budget. The committee's next meeting is on Tuesday,” said Alice Hucul, district spokesperson. “This committee will make recommendations to the board.”

As well, district staff is probably crossing fingers, hoping the Ministry of Education's per pupil funding for next year is unusually generous. A ministry announcement is expected this week.
