Design flaws

Staff at Vernon City Hall are hoping it will be third time lucky.

They have been told to make more changes to proposed welcome signs on major routes into the city.

The designs are by Tambellini Design Studios.

“It's a little bit of back to the drawing board,” Coun. Brian Quiring told staff during a council meeting Tuesday.

Quiring, an architect, had a long list of items he was unhappy with including the angular nature of the sign, the brushed aluminum background, even the 'V' at the beginning of Vernon.

“It's a little too playful,” said Quiring.

While his main cause of concern was the illustration, Quiring is also worried about the metal background. “I feel the material selection will be problematic.”

Council has chosen an option for the three signs that includes a wooden frame, concrete base and a section where messages on them can be changed.

But Quiring said staff will investigate how the metal material will perform when vehicle headlights hit it.

“The aluminum that I have had experience with is very, very bright and very, very reflective even if it is brushed, so I think that is going to be a concern at night so that's definitely going to be reviewed.”

This was the second time new gateway signage proposals had been before council. More illustrations are expected at the next council meeting.
