Hockeyville support

Lumby is still in the running for the Kraft Hockeyville 2016 title.

Residents have gotten behind the annual contest in a big way and the top 10 finalists - all of which will receive a prize of some sort - will be announced next month.

The winner not only gets the Hockeyville title, but $100,000.

The village's Pat Duke Memorial arena was packed on Family Day as residents turned out to support efforts to win.

A free family skate had those who could hardly walk learning to skate as well as those who've skated for years, say organizers.

“We had three generations of skaters on the ice,” said campaign co-captain Angie Clowry. “We also raised 128 pounds of food for the Lumby food bank and they are so appreciative of that.”

Ten communities across Canada will receive some sort of cash infusion into their local arena if they get the votes. Top prize is $100,000, with the pot going down from there.

People are encouraged to post their Lumby hockey and community memories on social media with the hashtag #khv_lumby to support the cause.

With a tax base of under 1,500 people, and not many more from the surrounding areas, organizers said it's hard to keep the Pat Duke Memorial Arena up to par.
