911 over hydrant crash

UPDATE: 3:34 P.M.

Vernon Fire Rescue chief Keith Green says his department's dispatchers were kept on the hop Thursday morning after a large truck bashed into a hydrant.

The accident occurred just before 4:46 a.m. when the first 911 call came in.

The hydrant was sheared off at 11th Avenue and Waddington Drive and water cascaded down onto Kal Lake Road.

Green said the calls kept coming into the department due to a time lapse when city crews were finally able to attend and turn off the water.

Conditions were slippery at the time due to last night's snowfall.

Emergency crews were kept busy Wednesday night as Old Man Winter made another assault on the North Okanagan.

Soon after the snow started falling, social media was abuzz with comments about terrible road conditions and many drivers were urging others to slow down.

Police were called to a few accidents including one on Highway 97 near Birnie Road..

“We had a few accidents on the roads last night and into today, but nothing major,” said Const. Jocelyn Noseworthy Thursday morning. “Mostly just people sliding into ditches, or minor fender benders, the usual snowy day stuff.”
