Freezing rain warning

Salmon Arm RCMP have issued a warning to drivers to slow down as the region contends with freezing rain.

Police attended seven motor vehicle collisions Monday and Tuesday and conditions on the roads are not good despite the best efforts of snow removal crews, said Staff Sgt. Scott West.

“The speed limit does not apply in this case, slow down,” said West. “With the freezing rain that we are seeing on the roads as you leave the lake level, our driving conditions will continue to deteriorate until the precipitation ends.”

Crashes include a semi truck rollover on the Trans-Canada Highway near 60 Avenue NE on Jan. 4 around 6:20 p.m. Minutes later another semi jack knifed into a ditch blocking part of the highway. No one was injured in either incident.

Around 9 a.m. Jan. 5, police attended an accident on the Trans-Canada north of Sunnybrae Canoe Point Road where a women driver had lost control of her SUV which flipped onto its roof trapping her arm underneath. An air ambulance transported the woman to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops for treatment of upper body injuries. The injuries were not believed to be life threatening.

“Slow down and give vehicles around you extra room,” stressed West. “Please remember a four-wheel drive might give you better acceleration but stopping and turning are seriously compromised in the conditions we are seeing right now.”
