130 stopped in road checks

RCMP say 130 drivers have been stopped for alcohol- and drug-related investigations on North Okanagan roads since holiday roadside checks began Dec. 1.

Sgt. Dave Bell of North Okanagan Traffic Services says most people have been slapped with three-, seven- or 30-day roadside prohibitions, although a small number resulted in Criminal Code investigations for driving over .08 blood-alcohol level.

“Several are drug-related driving incidents,” Bell adds.

“People have to be cognizant of the ramifications of their driving if they've been consuming alcohol or any kind of narcotic, including prescription medication,” says Bell.

Bell urges citizens who will be consuming alcohol over the holiday season to appoint a designated driver who stays sober.

“Make sure your loved ones, your friends and family, are all safe,” says Bell.
