Stop light dog leashes

The Village of Chase is hoping its residents adopt a colourful 'stop light' system for their dogs.

It is selling fluorescent dog leashes in green, yellow, red and orange.

“Green means 'go' so that's good” in terms of approaching a dog, said Tammy Pretty, the village's deputy corporate officer.

Chase is one of the first communities in Canada to adopt the new system that may help people identify canines as friendly or aggressive.

“The concept originated in the U.K.,” said Pretty. “It's huge in the U.K. right now and in Australia.”

The $15 plus tax leashes are also marked with wording. Green says 'friendly', yellow says 'nervous', red says 'caution' and orange states 'no dogs'.

“Red means take caution when you are approaching this dog,” explained Pretty, “ and the fluorescence means you can see the dog coming.”

Pretty said only 40 leashes had been ordered for the village of 2,500 people.

She said one customer decided not to buy one. “He said we didn't have one for his dog because it would have to read 'stupid.'”
