More cops coming soon

Vernon's top cop is pleased he will soon have two more officers under his command.

Last week, Vernon city council approved adding two additional officers to the payroll, bringing the total number of police in the Greater Vernon area to 50.

“This decision demonstrates the mayor and council's ongoing commitment to public safety. These officers will assist us in addressing concerns in the downtown area by providing a visible police presence through pro-active, targeted patrols. They'll continue to develop new working relationships and strengthen those we already enjoy with our community partners in an effort to reduce crime, maintain order and create a safe environment for everyone to enjoy,” said Supt. Jim McNamara.

Const. Jocelyn Noseworthy said the additional officers will allow the detachment to maintain two officers in the downtown enforcement division.

“We have put out the opportunity for our members to apply for the position. We just have to identify who gets those positions,” said Noseworthy, adding it may take a few weeks to hire the officers.

Once they are hired, they will be assigned to the downtown area.

Noseworthy said downtown patrols is something the detachment has been trying to do for some time, but has been hindered by a lack of manpower.

“We will be staffing those two positions full time, which is great news,” said Noseworthy.
