New office after fire

The Vernon office of the B.C. Ministry of Social Development has a new home.

Following a fire last summer, the office will open at its new location, 2820 28 St., near the library, on Nov. 30, according to Corrina Filion, a ministry spokesperson.

The old office on 48th Avenue was gutted by a massive fire in June that sent plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky across the city.

Clients were sent to the Service BC office in the interim.

Filion said about 3,000 people receive provincial aid and other services through the office.

All in-person services will be available at the new office, including cheque stub and document drop-off, and cheque pick up, Filion said.
