Bonus weekend at Star

A few things skiers and snowboarders should know: 148 cm of snow, three chairlifts in operation and 25 runs open.

It's time to head to the Star.

Mother Nature has dumped rain in the valley, but snow on the hills, allowing Silver Star Mountain Resort to open early with a bonus weekend Nov. 21-22.

Because not all the runs are open, snow hounds can hit the slopes with 50 per cent off lift tickets.

With a 72 cm alpine snow base and a 148 cm cumulative snowfall to date, the resort will open at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

"The season is certainly shaping up to be a good one," said Anne Haight, Silver Star’s director of sales and marketing.

With snow falling steadily the past two days, and more in the forecast, more runs may be open in time for the 21st.

After the bonus weekend, Silver Star will close for three days and open on Thursday, Nov. 26 for full winter season daily operations.

Cross-country skiers have been hitting the trails since the Nordic opening on Nov. 12. Currently, the majority of cross-country and snowshoeing trails are open, and fat biking is available on two of the mountain’s multi-use trails.

“As the snow base accumulates almost daily, we’re able to groom more trails all the time,” said Guy Paulsen, winter sports manager. “For snowshoeing, all the trails are accessible and we’re currently at about 50 km for cross-country.”
