Tax cheat sentenced

A Vernon woman has been sentenced to house arrest and fined $17,639 for a scam to avoid the taxman.

Deanna Lynn LaValley of the now-defunct tax preparation company Demara Consulting, was found guilty of fraud over $5,000 and falsely or deceptively claiming an (income tax) refund.

She was sentenced Nov. 10.

LaValley and her former business partner, Donna Marie Stancer, were accused by Canada Revenue Agency of filing nearly $192 million in false expenses for more than 200 clients. Agents raided their business looking for evidence in the spring of 2012.

LaValley has been handed two house orders, six months and 16 months, to be served consecutively.

She has been ordered to keep the peace, remain within the residence, going out only as specified and with written permission, and to avoid alcohol and drugs.

Meanwhile, Stancer's sentencing is expected Dec. 15.
