Vets cheered at service

Thousands of people cheered and gave a standing ovation to veterans during a Remembrance Day service in Vernon Wednesday.

About 45 veterans from the Second World War, Korean War and the war in Afghanistan marched, or were pushed in wheelchairs, into Kal Tire Place, behind pipers from the Kalamalka Highlanders.

People were reminded that those who served in the Second World War were now in their 90s.

Local dignitaries, including Okanagan-Shuswap MP Mel Arnold, Vernon Mayor Akbal Mund and North Okanagan Regional District director Mike Macnabb, laid wreaths, as did dozens of people representing service groups.

This year's Silver Cross mother was Ann Valouch who's brothers and father served in world wars.

The Vernon Community Band and Seaton Show Choir took part in the service.

As it came to a close, hundreds of people got up to lay their poppies at the foot of a cross, as an honour guard stood in silence.
