Airborne deer crashes rig

A Vernon man had a close encounter with a deer that sent a big rig in the ditch in Washington State.

According to the the Tonasket Gazette-Tribune, Vernon resident Richard L. Sanche, 50, was driving a 2015 Honda Civic northbound on Highway 97, about two miles south of Tonasket, when it struck a deer that ran onto the road at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The impact caused the deer to become airborne and it smashed into the windshield of a 2007 Kenworth truck with dump trailer being driven by Lloyd Caton Jr., of Tonasket.

The truck went over the centreline and crossed the northbound lane before coming to rest in the northbound ditch.

Caton was transported by to hospital by ambulance and then airlifted to Confluence Health for further treatment. There is no word on the extent of his injuries.

Sanche, who managed to park his car on the shoulder of the road, was not injured. And while his car was damaged, he was able to drive it from the scene.
