Arena website launched

Everything you ever wanted to know about the upcoming arena referendum can be found on a new website.

On Nov. 28, Greater Vernon voters (Vernon, Coldstream and Electoral Areas B and C) will be asked to approve borrowing $13.25 million dollars to construct a second ice sheet on the north side of Kal Tire Place.

The website features artists' drawings of the proposed second ice sheet, reasons why the new arena is needed and a list of frequently asked questions on the ice sheet and referendum.

The goal of the website is to give the public all the information they could need on the project said Doug Ross, director of recreation services.

“We want people to understand the state of the Civic Arena and what options are available,” said Ross. “The Civic has seen better days. A huge amount of work and a huge expense would be required to bring it up to the proper standards of today.”

The website also contains an engineering report and a report on the feasibility of repairing the aged arena.

“All of the information available in the FAQ section are facts that have come out of those documents,” said Ross.

Camps for those against the proposed arena are starting to pop up as the referendum draws near.

“With any issue, there are mixed opinions out there. There are people who have questions and that's great because it shows people are engaged in the issue. We are hearing from both sides,” said Ross.

People wanting to comment on the proposal can contact Ross at [email protected], or Shayne Wright, recreation program co-ordinator at [email protected].
