Youth at two Vernon schools will have easy access to condoms with the blessing of the school board and parent groups.
Vernon's school board has unanimously approved a three-month condom pilot project for Vernon and W.L. Seaton secondary schools.
Board chairperson Kelly Smith said Thursday a presentation on the pilot program was made in September, giving District 22 officials a month to consult parent advisory groups.
Those groups also supported going ahead with the program, said a school official.
The purpose of the Interior Health project is to discover if “offering free condoms in schools increases youth access to condoms and results in a decrease in STIs (sexually-transmitted infections) and unplanned pregnancies,” a report to the board stated last month.
Condoms will be distributed in a brown envelope, with lubricant and a wallet-sized card, in a designated area at the participating schools.
The card would include healthy sexuality links and invite students to respond to a survey.
The report said STIs and teen pregnancy remain a problem, both provincially and nationally.
