Big Roy passes away

A local leader in business has passed away.

Sidney 'Roy' Herrling died on Wednesday at age 83.

Herrling was the founder of Roy's Tire Service in Vernon, a business he started in the early 1970s.

Affectionately known as Big Roy, Herrling operated the independent tire store for years, working along side his son and eventually his grandson.

In 2001, Herrling suffered a stroke at work, necessitating he sell his beloved business to his main competitor, Kal Tire.

Herrling is survived by Dawn, his wife of 61 years, his son Mike and daughter Deb along with numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Born in Chilliwack on May 4, 1932, Herrling graduated from Hope High School and apparently was voted the least likely to succeed.

A funeral service will be held at Pleasant Valley Funeral Home Oct. 24 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, people are urged to donate to their charity of choice.
