Sports heroes lauded

Two top athletes and a sports builder will be inducted into the North Okanagan Sports Hall of Fame Saturday.

Josh Dueck, is an alpine skier who won silver at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Paralympics in the men's slalom sit-ski event.

At the 2014 games in Sochi, Russia, Dueck claimed gold and silver medals and carried the flag for Canada at the opening ceremony.

Dueck became the first person to perform a backflip on snow in a sit ski in 2012. That earned him worldwide attention and an appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres show.

Dueck is a vocal advocate for workplace safety and accessibility in sport.

A former freestyle skier and coach, Dueck overshot a demonstration jump on Silver Star mountain in 2004 breaking his back.

As an ace sit-skier, Dueck has won gold and bronze at past X Games and is the 2009 world downhill champ.

Vernon-born Drew Nielson won nine races on the FIS (International Ski Federation) World Cup tour and had 19 podiums in 14 seasons.

Nielsen won the Crystal Globe as the 2007 overall snowboard cross World Cup champ and took home the bronze medal at the 2003 FIS World championships in Austria.

He competed in two Olympics, placing in 17th spot at the 2006 games in Turin and 11th in Vancouver in 2010.

Other victories include gold at the 2000 Winter X Games and Gravity Games and multiple victories on the International Snowboard Federation World Boardercross Tour.

John Topping founded the highly successful Funtastic slo-pitch tournament in Vernon 31 years ago.

It has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local sporting facilities and groups while injecting $4 million into the regional economy each summer.

Topping has served as fundraising director for the Coldstream boy scouts, Special Olympics and Venture Training. He was also past chair of the Cancer Walk For a Cure.

Topping is a director of the North Okanagan athlete, team and sports builder of the year.

He is a winner of the Ernie Kowal Memorial Award for distinguished service.

The three inductees will be honoured at a banquet Saturday where former National Hockey League player and sports broadcaster Howie Meeker will be a guest speaker.
