Land deal not confirmed

Interior Health may have jumped the starting pistol with an announcement Tuesday of a residential care home to be built in Vernon's downtown.

A city-owned lot at 3006 29 Avenue has been earmarked for the multi-storey building with construction expected to begin this year. It is currently used as a parking lot.

The contract has been awarded to H & H Total Care Services Inc., which currently provides contracted residential services at care homes in Kamloops and Penticton.

However Mayor Akbal Mund said the land matter is still in camera with city council.

He said the subjects have not all been removed.

Mund refused to comment further.

"Our understanding is that further discussions regarding the land will take place tomorrow at the Vernon city council meeting," responded IHA spokesperson Patrick Gall, when asked if Interior Health officials had checked with city hall before making the announcement.

"These discussions are between the City of Vernon and the contractor (H & H Total Care Services Inc.) and do not involve us," Gall stated.

The new facility would house 85 much-needed residential care beds funded by the provincial government.
