Joyriding pair in custody

Video from scene

UPDATE: Sept. 22

Monday's police incident in Westwold involved a stolen vehicle from Summerland, according to Const. Jocelyn Noseworthy of the North Okanagan RCMP.

The RCMP received a report of a vehicle driving recklessly on Crown land about 12:30 p.m. The vehicle's licence plate matched that of a stolen pickup from Summerland, so a police helicopter and multiple officers were called to the scene.

"Members actually deployed spike belts on the vehicle, it punctured the rear two tires and then the members ... blocked off the road in both directions around the vehicle," said Noseworthy.

The stolen vehicle drove off the road and rolled.

"Because of the way they were driving, and the danger to the public, the members actually did take out their service pistols as well as some of their other weaponry," she said.

A 30-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman were taken from the vehicle and arrested. The pair is known to police, but Noseworthy did not have details about their prior run-ins. They were uninjured.

The pair remains in custody, and charges have not yet been laid. The investigation is ongoing.
