New gateway signage

Visitors to Vernon will be greeted by new signage next year.

The current signs on Highway 6 and the north and sound entrances on Highway 97 will be replaced, and this time the city of Vernon is picking up the entire tab.

The current signs were paid for by Greater Vernon communities, but they have become dated and in need of upgrading, so the city is shelling out $55,000 to replace the signs.

Two of the three signs will remain where they are, but the one at the south entrance to the city will be moved closer to the Department of National Defense lands, which is within city boundaries.

“You go to other communities and you see some wonderful signs,” said Mayor Akbal Mund, adding Spallumcheen east of Vernon has very nice welcome signage.

Coun. Juliette Cunningham said the new signs will be more colourful than the current ones and will incorporate Vernon's logo and colours.

She added much of the work can be done “in house.”
