Grass fire off highway

UPDATED: 6:40 P.M.

Fire crews now have the small blaze under control, according to the Vernon Fire Department.

The BC Wildfire Service water truck has left the scene and crews are mopping up what remains.

ORIGINAL: 6:00 P.M.

A two hectare grass fire is burning south of Vernon near Birnie Road off of Highway 97 this afternoon. 

Reports of the fire came in just after 5:00 p.m. The Vernon fire department is on scene and has asked the BC Wildfire Service for assistance.

The BC Wildfire Service is sending a helicopter, a water truck and one response officer.
