Crews battle two fronts

Despite 24 properties remaining on evacuation alert, no structures are being threatened by the Bolean Lake wildfire near Falkland.

An evacuation order for the Bolean Lake Lodge was issued Monday, and four campers and the owner fled to safety.

Navie Saini, fire information officer with the Kamloops Fire Centre, said the fire is currently burning on the opposite side of the lake from the lodge, so it is no longer in immediate danger.

Saini said the lightning-caused fire has actually broken up into two separate fires. One is 80 hectares, the other is 170 hectares.

Although the fires are about five kilometres from Falkland, they are burning upslope and away from the small community 30 minutes north of Vernon on Highway 97.

Crews are attacking the larger fire with 40 people on the ground, three pieces of heavy equipment and a helicopter. Air tankers dropped retardant on the flames earlier in the day, but the use of air support has been spotty due to fluctuating winds.

“It is quite windy, so that is challenging,” Saini said, adding the evacuation alert remains in effect.

“Structural protection units have been requested,” Saini said of the sprinkler systems that can be set up on and around homes to create a “humidity bubble” around the structure that will help slow the flames.

This is not the first time area residents have had to deal with a fire in their backyards. In 2003, a massive fire forced many people to evacuate and one home was lost.

“There is some anxiety in the community right now,” said Ryan Nitchie, with the Columbia Shuswap Regional District.

Nitchie said officials are providing as much information as they can to calm any fears locals may have.

People have also been moving their livestock to safer ground as well.

Falkland Fire Department deputy chief Neil Bourgh said the volunteer firefighters have been going to the homes under evacuation alert and doing what they can to help.

“Some people are a little scared,” Bourgh said Tuesday evening.

But having the firefighters stop by with tips, advice and information is helping to alleviate those fears.
