Evac alert near Falkland

High winds are wreaking havoc with a wildfire near Falkland, prompting an evacuation alert for several homes.

The Bolean Lake wildfire exploded to 300 hectares in a matter of hours, fueled by high winds and dry conditions.

Residents living in the area between Bolean Lake and Chase-Falkland Road from a few kilometres from Falkland to Aurthur Lake Forest Service Road have been advised they may have to evacuate on a moment's notice.

Kelsey Winter, Fire Information Officer with the Kamloops Fire Centre, said winds are gusting up to 60 km/h.

“All of our air support is grounded due to safety concerns,” said Winter “There are five firefighters at the site right now.”

The Falkland Volunteer fire department and forestry firefighters have established a command post on Chase-Falkland Road, about five kilometres from Highway 97 and Falkland.

Neil Bourgh, deputy fire chief, said the role of the volunteer crew would be to protect any structures threatened by the flames.

The command post is next to a farm house with several horses and approximately one kilometre from the fire itself which is at the top of a steep hill.

Bourgh said there are several logging cut blocks in the area, which is good news for fire crews.

“Then it will only be a ground fire. It won't get into the trees,” said Bourgh from the command post before meeting with forestry officials.

The fire is believed to have been started by lightning, but it is still under investigation.
