Greens go it alone

The North Okangan-Shuswap Greens have extended an olive branch to the Liberals and NDP, but so far their suggestion to team up against the ruling Conservatives has been rebuffed.

Greig Crocket, North Okangan-Shuswap Greens CEO, said they contacted both major parties in the spirit of co-operation, but as of Monday the candidates will be entering the fall election as individual political entities.

“The Liberals and NDP were invited to come to us with some options for co-operation, but neither of them did,” said Crockett, adding seeking unity with other parties is nothing new for the Greens.

“The Green Party, and Elizabeth May on the national level, have invited both opposition parties co-operate, but they have not taken her up on the proposition.”

In the Kelowna-Lake Country riding, the Greens and Grits have joined forces behind the federal Liberals in an effort to unseat the Tories, who traditionally enjoy strong support throughout the Valley.

Liberal candidate Stephen Fuhr has committed to a partnership that would incorporate key planks of the Green platform in both his campaign and activities in Parliament if he he is successful in knocking off Tory incumbent Ron Cannan.

Crockett said the Greens are eager to work with other parties to cash in on what he calls the “strong anti-Harper” movement he claims is growing in the region.

If the three parties run individually, Crockett said they will likely split the vote, resulting in another Conservative victory.

While the major political parties in the riding have already selected their candidates for the fall federal election, the Green Party will decide Thursday who will carry the party banner.

The Greens will choose between Chris George and Keli Westgate at the Schubert Centre in Vernon, starting 7 p.m. The successful candidate will square off against Conservative hopeful Mel Arnold, Liberal candidate Cindy Derkaz and NDP candidate Jaqui Gingras.

Green Party members will use a preferential ballot to decide who will represent them.

Crockett said George has run for the Greens on the national level in the past, while Westgate has experience on the municipal level, having run for a seat in Oyama.
