NHLers hit the beach

Vernon and area residents flocked to Kal Beach Friday afternoon to mingle with NHL stars and help raise money for the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation.

The NHL Players Association Community Celebration raised $7,000 for VJH, and the NHLPA's Goals and Dreams fund donated $50,000 worth of hockey equipment to minor hockey associations in the region.

About 2,000 people came out to the celebration on Kalamalka Lake.

The hockey gear will go to minor hockey associations in Vernon, Salmon Arm and West Kelowna.

Twenty current and former NHL players were on hand to coach standup paddleboard polo, sign autographs, announce the winners of signed NHL player jerseys and present the equipment to aspiring young players.

The NHLers included Vernon's Curtis Lazar, Andrew Ference, Scott Hartnell, Cam Atkinson, Steve Webb, Jason Chimera, David Booth, Manny Malhotra and others. Broadcaster and former NHL goalie Kelly Hrudey emceed the event, and local recording artist Andrew Allen performed.

The community celebration was the second event of the two-day NHLPA Summer Classic, following Thursday's NHLPA Golf Classic, which raised an additional $100,000 for charity.

Predator Ridge hosted the players and collaborated with the city VJH Foundation to put on Friday's celebration.
