Three dead over weekend

UPDATED: 4 P.M.

Vernon RCMP are imploring anyone with information on the death of a man in Cosens Bay over the weekend to come forward.

Const. Jocelyn Noseworthy said Monday the body was discovered Sunday afternoon by a paddleboarder on the south side of Cosens Bay, across from the public beach and near some cabins.

Police are not releasing the man's name, age or cause of death, but Noseworthy said the public does not have reason to be concerned for their safety.

“We are treating this as a suspicious death at this time, but we do that with all sudden deaths,” said Noseworthy.

“It's a very active investigation. We are trying to figure out exactly what happened to this person.”

Noseworthy could not say how long the body had been in the water.

“We are still working on a timeline,” she said, stressing the importance of witnesses coming forward. “We don't think it has been there for weeks and weeks.”

Police also released a few more details on a fatal motorcycle accident that left two men dead Sunday morning.

While police are not releasing their names, Noseworthy said the men – 23 and 24 years old – were from Vernon, but did not live in the East Vernon Road area where the accident happened.

“Alcohol is believed to be a factor in this accident,” Noseworthy said, adding neither man was wearing a helmet when the dirtbike they were on left the road and hit a utility trailer.

The call came in to police at 6:30 a.m., and police believe the accident happened approximately an hour earlier.

“We are trying to determine what they were doing prior to the accident and who saw them last,” she said.

Anyone with information on either case is asked to call police at 250-545-7171, or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
