Reckless action starts fire

Quick action by citizens averted a potentially disastrous situation in a popular park.

About 7 p.m. Tuesday, Coldstream Fire Rescue was called to the Turtles Head area of Kal Lake Provincial Park.

Fire Chief Dave Sturgeon said witnesses reported individuals were shooting a flare gun over the lake when, for some reason, they turned and fired a flare into the brush, starting a fire.

“It's very frustrating for something as reckless as that to cause a fire,” said Sturgeon, adding there has been a spate of human-caused fires in the North Okanagan the past few weeks.

Sturgeon had high praise for the people who jumped into action by pouring water on the one-metre-square fire and stomping out the flames. The fire was out before crews arrived.

“We went in to make sure it was 100 per cent out,” he said.

The potential for a serious wildfire is obvious given the hot temperatures the Valley has been experiencing lately.

“It's about two kilometres from the parking lot, so anything we needed we had to pack in there,” he said. “If it had gotten away, it would likely have been an air tanker show.”

Sturgeon doesn't know what happened to the people with the flare gun, but he encourages people to not only call the fire department, but police if they witness someone starting a fire.
