Arsonist on the loose?

It would appear someone is setting fires in the Vernon area – again.

During the past couple of weeks, fire crews have responded to several grass and brush fires in Becker and Jubilee parks that are human caused.

Most of the fires happen early in the morning, and about 5 a.m. Tuesday, Vernon Fire Rescue was called to yet another – this time near Alexis Park Church.

Lawrie Skolrood, deputy fire chief, said it was a small fire and no structures were damaged or threatened, but the spate of fires is becoming a concern – especially with the heat of the summer raising the fire hazard.

“There is a concern about someone walking around at five o'clock in the morning setting fires,” said Skolrood.

Police are investigating the string of recent fires.

This is not the first time police and fire officials have been on the hunt for an arsonist. Last year, several suspicious fires were set around the city.

Skolrood added it's hard to say if the fires are connected.
