Fire in Becker Park - again

Vernon Fire Rescue were called to Becker Park near the recreation centre again Saturday morning.

VFR Capt. Brent Bond said it was the third fire in the park in the last 10 days.

“It's suspicious and RCMP are investigating,” said Bond. “Police collected material from the scene.”

The fire was reported at around 6:30 a.m. Crews quickly doused the blaze that had grown to 20 feet by 40 feet, but Bond said had it been later in the day when it was hotter or if there had been a breeze it could have been larger.

The park has long been a concern for local officials due to its heavy use, proximity to home and overnight use by area transients.

“There are people from time to time who do stay there, but a lot of it is just careless smoking,” said Lawrie Skolrood, deputy fire chief.

To help lower the fire risk in the park, crews have cleaned out much of the ground fuel, but there is only so much that can be done.

Officials will be monitoring the park on a regular basis.
