Boozy swimmer rescued

A 19-year-old Alberta man is lucky to be alive after a booze-fuelled swim in Okanagan Lake over the weekend.

Vernon RCMP spokesman Gord Molendyk said the unidentified man had been drinking with friends at Ellison Provincial Park near Vernon when he got into an argument and left the group about 5 p.m. Friday.

He then attempted to swim to the west side of the lake.

“The subject had removed most of his clothing and left them on a rock,” Molendyk said, adding his companions waited an hour before calling police about his disappearance.

“Vernon Search and Rescue were called out with their boats, and they located the man several hundred metres from the opposite shore,” said Molendyk.

The man was not injured, but he was taken to Vernon Jubilee Hospital briefly because the cold water had lowered his body temperature to the point paramedics were concerned.

The man was apologetic for his actions. No charges are being considered.
