Boost for health centre

The Lumby & District Health Services Society has received a B.C. Gaming Branch grant for $10,000.

It was presented by Vernon-Monashee MLA Eric Foster.

"The funds are very important to the community as they provide increased health and educational support for families and caregivers and provide health care accessibility to our more rural population,” said Elinor Turrill, director of the society.

In 1974, a group of concerned citizens of Lumby and area felt the need for better health services for the growing community.

The urgency was strong, as communication and transportation links between Vernon were not accessible for everyone – especially the elderly and lower-income families. That led to the society's creation.

As part of its original mandate, the society gathered public and community support, and in 1976 built the Lumby Health Clinic to encourage physicians to set up practice. The organization maintains lab and X-ray services in the community.
