No juice for electric cars

A request to Vernon council by a Victoria-based organization to require new developments have electric vehicle charging stations has been turned down.

“I think this is 10 to 20 years away,” Mayor Akbul Mund said of the request.

The Victoria Leaf Club says electric vehicle sales are growing, and mandating the infrastructure now will save costs later.

"An electric vehicle rough-in for single- and two-family units is estimated to add about $50 to the cost of a dwelling unit versus the $1,000 to $2,500 or higher cost of retrofitting electrical conduit and cable after construction," said Fred Wissemann, president of the Victoria Leaf Club in a letter to the city.

The city currently has two charging station, which are lightly used at this point.

“The roadway transportation sector currently accounts for 22 per cent of all greenhouse gas emissions,” said Wissemann.

The province recently announced a $10.6-million program to make it more affordable for people to buy alternative-energy vehicles. People who buy a clean-energy vehicle, including some electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, are now eligible for rebates of up to $6,000.
