Eye on problem gambling

BC Lotteries is partnering with the province and Gateway Casinos for Responsible Gambling Awareness week.

The effort is aimed at engaging the community in activities designed to raise awareness of responsible gambling practices, April 12 to 18.

"As a gaming service provider, it is our responsibility to ensure they are making the most informed decision when they choose gaming as a form of entertainment," said Tanya Gabara, director of public relations for Gateway Casinos.

BCLC and the province’s Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch trained local volunteers who will staff a myth-busting kiosk at various venues throughout the week including Okanagan College, Galaxy Cinemas and the Okanagan Indian Band health department.

“In 2012, Vernon was BCLC’s pilot project for Responsible Gambling Awareness Week, and with its continued success, we are excited to be back in the community again for another year," said Jim Lightbody, the lottery corporation's president.

The entire community is welcome to a free public swim on Sunday, April 12 from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Swim for free, play games and win prizes, all while learning about the responsible gambling programs and problem gambling resources available in Vernon.

Vernon is one of five communities hosting such events. The others are Richmond, Kamloops, Greater Victoria, and Langley.

Whether they buy a lottery ticket, bet in a casino, or gamble online, 81 per cent of adult British Columbians gamble at least once a year.

Responsible Gambling Awareness Week was created to educate communities about responsible play and to raise awareness of problem gambling support services available in the community.

The Problem Gambling Help Line (1-888-795-6111) offers problem gamblers free, confidential, multilingual help from trained professionals (11 languages, text services impaired) along with free problem gambling counselling services.
