Nurse-in planned at mall

A Vernon woman is upset and promising action after being told not to breastfeed her four-month-old son inside the Village Green Centre.

“I was told there is a time and place for that by a security guard at the mall, and that it was inappropriate,” said Megan Dueling-Griffith.

She posted her comments on Facebook and has made a call for a nurse-in Saturday at 1 p.m. at the mall, which resulted in an immediate response of support.

“Lots of folks are still so uncomfortable with breastfeeding mommas, and just need education! This is about human rights, and North America and Britain seem to be resistant to mommas supplying what their babies need without being sequestered shamefully away! It may take another 20 or 40 years, but there is no change if we don't stand together people," Carolyn Matyjanka said on the group Facebook page Vernon Rant and Rave.

“I think the mall should take one of those recently vacated spaces and turn it into a family room! Don't get me wrong, I feed anywhere and everywhere, covered or not. But we need a mom space! The mall in Kelowna has that fantastic family room, and Cross Iron Mills (North of Calgary) has nursing rooms attached to most female bathrooms,” said Shawna Klassen Ross.

A call to mall administrator Faron Robinson was not immediately returned.
